City Council Approves Urban Forest Enhancement Plan
On Monday, July 28, 2008, the Port St. Lucie City Council approved the implementation of an Urban Forest Enhancement Plan, which will be developed by Davey Resource Group and administered by the Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful (KPSLB) Committee.
The Urban Forest Enhancement Plan will help the city reach its goals under the U.S. Conference of Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, whereby cities throughout the country, including Port St. Lucie, have committed to further the objectives of the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Find out more about the Climate Protection Agreement.
The Urban Forest Enhancement Plan includes an initial citywide tree canopy assessment, setting a goal to increase the city's tree canopy, and the development of a master tree planting plan to reach this goal. Actual tree planting projects will commence after the development of the master tree planting plan; it is expected that planting projects will continue through 2012.
Most of the $17,000 cost of the this project will be paid using a $15,000 Urban and Community Forestry grant that was recently awarded to the KPSLB Committee by the Florida Division of Forestry.
Davey Resource Group is a leader in providing urban forestry consulting services and was chosen after a search conducted by the KPSLB Committee.
