Batteries are an essential part of our daily lives, but improper disposal can harm the environment and pose safety risks.

The City of Port St. Lucie is encouraging residents to follow safe and environmentally responsible practices for battery disposal.


How to dispose of batteries safely

Rechargeable batteries commonly found in items

Single-use alkaline batteries (AA,AAA, C, D, 9-volt):
Modern alkaline batteries are generally safe to dispose of in household trash, as they are not considered hazardous waste.

Rechargeable Batteries Lithium-ion, NiMH, NiCD (greetings card, cell phone, e-bikes, e-cigarettes, laptops, power tools, etc.) and Lithium Batteries (camera batteries):
Rechargeable batteries contain hazardous materials. These batteries are considered Household Hazardous Waste and should not be placed in the trash. Please drop them off at designated locations for proper disposal.

Button Cell Batteries (Hearings aids and watches):
Button cell batteries may contain mercury or silver. These batteries are considered Household Hazardous Waste and should not be placed in the trash. Please drop them off at designated locations for proper disposal.

Car Batteries (lead-acid):
Lead-acid car batteries are highly toxic and should be returned to auto parts stores or the Solid Waste Baling & Recycling Facility.
