Adopt-a-Street or Spot

The Adopt-a-Street/Spot program reduces the number of streets that rely on city resources for maintenance. When businesses and individuals take responsibility for specific streets, they free up city resources and help create vibrant green spaces.

With 917 centerline miles of roadway in the city, over 135 groups and individuals currently keep more than 175 miles litter-free. With a population of over 200,000, the remaining 742 miles can also become litter-free. Removing litter before it reaches the storm system reduces stormwater runoff pollution, keeping our wetlands, lakes, and rivers cleaner.

How It Works

To adopt a street or spot (such as a public right-of-way or retention pond area), all you need is some time and a commitment to collect litter at least twelve times a year (once a month or more, if you wish).

We provide everything else free of charge: litter grabbers, trash bags, safety shirts, training, and the pickup and disposal of collected trash. All you need to do is pick up the litter.

Who can adopt a street?

Adopt-a-Street Volunteer BBQ

  • Businesses: Set the example and either individually or collectively adopt the street in front of your business.
  • Churches: Encourage your congregation and youth group to adopt the street that runs in front of your church.
  • Civic and Other Community Organizations: Publicize the good works of your organization by adopting a mile of street.
  • Homeowner Associations: Adopt the street(s) around the perimeter of your communities.
  • Homeowners: Take care of the community like you take care of your property; adopt the street in front of your home. (Enlist your neighbors to join you by forming a neighborhood group.)
  • Joggers and Walkers: Incorporate some bending and stooping exercises in your routine, and adopt the streets where you run.
  • Schools: Sponsor a student group to keep your school grounds and surrounding roads litter-free.

In addition to helping Port St. Lucie become litter-free, your group will be recognized with a sign that provides your group's name posted in both directions of your adopted street.

All that is needed is your time and willingness to conduct litter cleanups at least 12 times a year. Office of Solid Waste  will provide you with the litter tongs, trash bags, safety vest, training, and pickup service in order to dispose of the collected waste.

What do I do with the trash/litter picked up?

After completing your cleanup, please fill out a Litter Removal Form. If you need the city to pick up the trash bags, just check the appropriate box on the form. Pickup will be arranged upon submission.

How often will I be required to clean the street that I'm considering for adoption?

We ask that Adopt-a-Street litter cleanups be conducted at least twelve times a year. We encourage litter collection as frequently as possible.

How do I find out what streets are available for adoption?

KPSLB staff can assist you with the search and identification of an acceptable location for adoption. Call us at 772-871-5103 for assistance.

It is recommended that one mile of street be considered for adoption. This helps to reduce the annual cost of manufacturing and maintaining the signs that are posted along the roadway.
