City of PSL Hurricane Milton Advisory #6

Published on October 09, 2024

Hurricane Milton Weather Watch

The City of Port St. Lucie continues to monitor Hurricane Milton’s path and this afternoon has experienced significant rain and tornado events in the City.

Below are updates for Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. The next advisory is expected to be released Thursday morning unless an additional advisory is necessary.

Due to increasingly hazardous conditions, residents should stay off the roads for these reasons:

  • Confirmed tornadoes
  • Down traffic lights
  • Down trees
  • Down powerlines
  • Water on the roads

The presence of drivers on the roads in these conditions makes it harder for our public safety officers to do their jobs and can endanger the lives of first responders.

During a tornado, people face hazards from extremely high winds and risk of falling objects. Take shelter if you see signs of a tornado. According to the Center for Disease Control & Prevention:

  • Go to an inside room, without windows, on the lowest floor. This could be a center hallway, bathroom, or closet.
  • Avoid taking shelter where there are heavy objects on the floor directly above you. Heavy objects, such as refrigerators or pianos, could fall though the floor if the tornado strikes your house.
  • For added protection, get under something sturdy such as a heavy table or workbench. If possible, cover your body with a blanket, sleeping bag, or mattress, and protect your head with anything available—even your hands.

Utility Systems-Precautionary Boil Water Notice: The Port St. Lucie Utility Systems Department (PSLUSD) is issuing a precautionary boil water notice for water customers beginning tonight at 8 p.m.

This action is being taken in an abundance of caution to protect the health of our PSLUSD customers. The ground is already soft from recent heavy rains, combined with potential flooding, the threat of strong winds and downed trees, there is an increased possibility of damage to the system’s water mains. By boiling water as a precaution, customers will be protected in the case of potential water main breaks.

This precautionary action is being taken because of the changing severe weather conditions. There are no known compromises to the system at this time.

Residents are encouraged to fill up containers with their tap water before 8 p.m. to ensure they have safe drinking water to use throughout the storm. Customers who plan to use any water for consumption after 8 p.m. tonight should boil water for at least two minutes prior to using.

Once the storm passes and PSLUSD facilities have been fully reviewed and approved for service, the precautionary boil water notice will be lifted.

Please call 772-873-6400 regarding any issues with water or sewer service or visit cityofpsl.com/utility for more information regarding storm preparations. PSLUSD chat service has also been enabled and will be available 24/7 through the storm event.
