Volunteer Tax Assistance Available for St. Lucie County Residents

Trained volunteers with Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP will be providing free tax preparation assistance at five locations throughout St. Lucie County starting in February.

VITA sites offer free tax filing assistance to residents making $67,000 or less per year. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. AARP tax help is targeted at low- to moderate-income taxpayers. While the focus is on taxpayers 60 years or older, the volunteers don't turn anyone away because of age.

Assistance will be offered at the following locations:

  • VITA Assistance at the Kilmer Branch Library, 101 Melody Lane in Fort Pierce on Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. (walk-in) Feb. 1 through April 12. For questions, call 211.
  • VITA Assistance at Indian River State College, Bldg. Y-Rm. 102, 3209 Virginia Ave. in Fort Pierce on Thursdays from 2 to 7 p.m. (appointment only) Feb. 6 through March 27. (Note the site will be closed on March 20.)
  • VITA Assistance at the Port St. Lucie Community Center, 2195 SE Airoso Blvd. in Port St. Lucie on Mondays through Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (walk-in) Feb. 3 through April 16. (Note the site will be closed Feb. 17.)
  • AARP Assistance at the Morningside Branch Library, 2410 SE Morningside Blvd. in Port St. Lucie on Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (appointment only) Feb. 4 through April 11. For details and appointments, call 772-200-1418.

A list of potential paperwork that residents will need to bring to have their federal taxes prepared includes: Proof of identification, Social Security numbers, birth dates of family members, property tax bills, all income documents, including wage and earning statement(s) W-2, W-2G, 1099-R from all employers; interest and dividend statements from banks (forms 1099-Div); a copy of last year’s federal and state returns (if available); health care expenses; donation receipts and bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit.

Volunteers at all the sites have been trained by the Internal Revenue Service.  For walk-in locations, residents will be helped on a first-come; first-served basis.
