WPTV to host tradition town hall on Florida's insurance crisis 9-17-24

Port Saint Lucie, FL – WPTV News 5 is inviting the public to take part in a news special on the insurance crisis in Florida. The hour-long television event will be conducted live on Tuesday, September 17, at 7:00 PM. The town hall-style program will fittingly be held in the Tradition Town Hall at 10799 Southwest Civic Lane in Port Saint Lucie and co-hosted by Reporter Matt Sceszny and Anchor Meghan McRoberts. Attendees will be part of a “studio” audience that will be encouraged to ask questions to the panelists. That panel will include State Representative Toby Overdorf (R), candidate for State Representative Andi Poli (D), and home inspection expert Calvin Johnson.

Town Hall: Coverage Collapse is part of WPTV’s ongoing commitment to helping our viewers find solutions to the increasing costs of home insurance. Since January, Reporter Matt Sceszny has been doing daily reporting on the topic, holding public leaders accountable on the issue and tracking the success of reimbursement programs like My Safe Florida Home.

“I have not seen an issue more important to homeowners in Florida than insurance. The frustrations and pain this is causing has led us to keep digging into this multi-layered problem,” said Reporter Matt Sceszny. “I’ve dedicated myself to understanding the industry and building connections with those who are in a position to make changes. I’m working to amplify the voices of those who are hurting and struggling to stay in their homes.”

This will be the third special that WPTV has hosted on this issue over the last year. Previous specials included:

  • A roundtable discussion with elected leaders and a respected insurance agent from Martin County just after the legislative session wrapped.
  • A sit-down with the CEO of Citizens’ Insurance, the state-run insurer of last resort, and former Florida CFO and Insurance Commissioner Tom Gallagher.
